Abstract

This paper defines those conceptual elements associated with the essential nature of urban identity from the particular perspective of human geography which assumes the perception and meaning of the individual's own understanding of place. The paper proposes that the strengthening of the concept of urban identity is requisite to a better quality of life in a globalized world: a world which tends towards homogeneity and the elimination of expressions leading to the formation of different local cultures. The paper explains how the teachers must use learning strategies which enable the survival of local traditions, experiences, struggles and cultural heritage values. In other words, the teachers must teach students to value the historical contributions of those who inhabit distinct local urban spaces within the context of a dynamic global environment.
