The purpose of this article is to look at the historical approach to the concept of university teaching. The etymological meaning of the word is clarified and its use in everyday and specialized language is examined to determine when it was incorporated into scientific language. The concept of university teaching appeared in the early 20th century as a general theory of instruction at the college level. Later, other didactic elements were added to give the concept meaning as a specialized area of teaching. Problems relative to higher education are analyzed from a theoretical standpoint with an eye towards facilitating a translation of languages to communicate the sense or meaning of knowledge in student learning and practice.
