The purpose of this article is to present the results of a study designed to identify the most significant causes of dropout in distance education in the Colombian context.
First, a literature review was conducted, revealing five categories associated with attrition in distance education. The review also showed that distance education experiences higher attrition rates than traditional face-to-face education. Subsequently, a questionnaire-type instrument was designed, validated, and administered; the results indicate that the main cause of dropout in distance education is economic in nature, followed by institutional or organizational factors. One of the most significant causes is related to difficulties in interacting with tutors, peers, and course content. This gap could be explained by the lack of a distance education model that considers its specific characteristics; in this context, the transactional distance theory proposed by Michael G. Moore emerges as relevant for the design of such a model.
