The article reflects on the teaching and learning processes in contemporary schooling, where the priority is on furthering autonomous, self-regulated and continuous learning that allows one to navigate the large quantity of available information and to convert it into knowledge. The “explicitation” and application of cognitive and metacognitive strategies enables students to acquire the tools they need to foster autonomous learning. The role of the teacher in supporting this process is one of a mediator and guide.
